How To Carry Out An Effective Site Audit

A site audit is a system whereby you assess the performance of your Internet web space, and formulate possible ways to improve its efficiency. Much of this process involves search engine optimization, as it through Google and the other search engines that most commercial websites are found. There can be a variety of reasons why your website is not performing as well as you hoped, but everything falls into two basic categories. Your on site optimization is the way in which your website is set up. It is something over which you have complete control, so it needs to be as highly optimized as possible.

Off page factors are different. You only have a limited amount of control over these, although there is much which can be done within that limitation. One of the most important off page factors is back linking, that is, the web pages and properties which link back to your site, and obviously you don't have full control over this. There are, however, ways to increase both the number and the quality of backlinks to your site, once you have completed your audit and seen where you can achieve the greatest benefit.

It is best to start with an on page site audit, for several reasons. Firstly, it is something you have complete, direct, control over, so you can make changes very quickly. Secondly, there is little point in trying to build up links through any system which involves negotiation with other people until your own site has become a desirable property in its own right. Finally, there is the simple fact that on page optimization is the fastest way to make a change in your site's ranking.

The most important areas to concentrate on are the headings, and anything within the meta tags. These areas are often ignored by people who latch on to the latest gimmicks with scant regard for the important fundamentals, but they remain the backbone of search engine optimization. Carry out the necessary research into which keywords your prospects are using to search for your service, and make sure that those keywords appear in the title, the meta tags, and any headings used on the page.

The rest of on page optimization is simply content. If you do not want to write article based material yourself, hire a professional writer to do this for you. Once this has been done, you can begin your off page linking campaign, armed with the knowledge of how many links you will initially need to build to achieve your target.
